Free EAN-13 barcode generator.
EAN-13 is the barcode that retail checkouts scan on consumer products. Enter your Global Trade Item Number (GTIN-13) with or without the check digit; the generator adds or verifies it.
How to create an EAN-13 barcode
-
01
Enter the GTIN
Type your GS1 Company Prefix and item reference, 12 digits in total; the generator adds the check digit. Paste all 13 and it verifies the last one, which helps catch typing errors.
-
02
Set the module width
Enter your printer's resolution and a module width (X-dimension: the width of the narrowest bar) in whole pixels, such as 3 at 240 dpi (0.318 mm), which keeps the bars at GS1's minimum height. For checkouts, stay within 0.264–0.660 mm, ideally 0.330 mm.
-
03
Download and place it
Download PNG, not JPG, for labels and documents, or vector SVG, available with a plan, for packaging artwork that will be scaled. Keep the white margins, which are the quiet zones, and make the bars at least 22.85 mm high at 0.330 mm.
What is an EAN-13 barcode?
An EAN-13 barcode encodes a GTIN-13, the 13-digit number that identifies a consumer product, and checkout scanners read it in any direction. The bars carry only this number: the price sits in the retailer's system, the product data comes from you. GS1, the standards organisation behind EAN-13, licenses the numbers through its member organisations.
Where EAN-13 barcodes are scanned
Brands print their GTIN-13 as an EAN-13 on packs sold at checkouts, from cereal boxes to cans. Besides checkout scanners, handheld laser scanners read it, while two-dimensional (2D) codes need an imager.
Supermarket scales print EAN-13 labels for goods sold by weight, such as apples at a price per kilo, using restricted numbers that start with 02 or 20–29. Bookshops scan 978 and 979 numbers from the International Standard Book Number (ISBN) system, newsagents 977 numbers built from International Standard Serial Numbers (ISSN).
How your business benefits from a correct EAN-13
Your GTIN-13 is unique worldwide, and no distributor, wholesaler or importer may give the unchanged product a different one. Every retailer therefore lists it under your number and matches it to your product data. The check digit lets the scanner reject misread numbers.
GS1 requires print quality grade 1.5 or better, the level at which symbols scan acceptably. Black on white almost always reaches the top contrast grade, brown corrugated board at most the lowest passing one. Bars shorter than their minimum height scan only in some orientations and slow the checkout.
Formats and automation for a product range
GS1 requires a separate GTIN whenever a product differs in a way that matters to trade, so a range needs one EAN-13 for each such variant. Barcode Studio imports the GTINs from a text or CSV file and exports all barcodes in one run. Its Pro edition adds vector EPS, PDF, SVG and AI files with CMYK support.
TBarCode Office links an EAN-13 to an Excel cell, so the bars change with the number. TBarCode/SAPwin prints it from SAPscript or Smart Forms with the print control C=E13.

How the 13 digits and the check digit are built
A GTIN-13 consists of a GS1 Company Prefix of 4 to 12 digits, an item reference you assign and a check digit. A 9-digit prefix leaves 3 digits for item references: 1,000 products. The first digits, the GS1 Prefix, show the type of number:
| First digits | Number type |
|---|---|
| 0, except 02 and 04 | A GTIN-12 with a 0 in front; GTIN-13s never start with 0 |
| 02, 20–29 | Restricted number for one country or region, e.g. weighed goods |
| 04 | Restricted number inside one company |
| 10–19, 300–950, 953–976 | GTIN-13 from a GS1 Company Prefix |
| 977 | Periodical (ISSN) |
| 978, 979 | Book (ISBN); 9790 is printed music |
Calculating the check digit of the example 952012345678:
- Multiply the 12 digits by 1 and 3 alternately, from the left: 9, 15, 2, 0, 1, 6, 3, 12, 5, 18, 7, 24.
- Add the results: 102.
- Subtract the sum from the nearest equal or higher multiple of ten: 110 − 102 = 8.
- Complete number: 9520123456788.
EAN-13 size, placement and print checks
- Size. 80–200% of nominal (0.264–0.660 mm) at checkouts; at least 0.495 mm if warehouses scan the pack too.
- Quiet zones. 11X left, 7X right: 3.63 and 2.31 mm at 0.330 mm. The generator includes them.
- Digits. All 13 digits must appear below the bars, the first left of the start guard. OCR-B is the recommended font.
- Contrast. Dark bars on a light background: the darkest bar must reflect at most half as much light as the background.
- Placement. Preferably the lower right quadrant of the back, 8–100 mm from the nearest edge. On cylinders under 48 mm in diameter, turn the code so the bars run around the cylinder.
- Verification. Most verifiers grade print quality but do not measure bar height, so check the height separately.
Printers print whole dots, so choose an X-dimension of whole dots:
| Printer | Dots per module | X-dimension | Minimum bar height |
|---|---|---|---|
| 203 dpi (8 dots/mm) | 3 | 0.375 mm | 25.97 mm |
| 300 dpi (12 dots/mm) | 4 | 0.333 mm | 23.08 mm |
| 600 dpi (24 dots/mm) | 8 | 0.333 mm | 23.08 mm |
GS1 allows 0.250 mm (2 dots at 203 dpi) only for thermal or laser printing on demand. The space for the symbol and its quiet zones should still be at least that of a 0.264 mm symbol.
Common EAN-13 mistakes
- Typing a 12-digit UPC number. The generator reads 12 digits as data and adds a check digit: 725272730706 becomes 7252727307068. Create a UPC-A instead.
- Resizing the image in layout software. Scaling adds or drops pixels unevenly, and bar widths drift. Generate at final size and printer resolution, or use a vector file.
- Shortening the bars to fit. A truncated EAN-13 scans only in some orientations. Reduce the X-dimension instead, or use EAN-8 on packs too small for EAN-13.
- Printing into the quiet zones. A frame, text or label edge within 10X on the left or 6.2X on the right fails verification. Keep 11X and 7X clear.
- Giving an old GTIN to a new product. This risks conflicting product data; GS1 forbids reallocating GTINs, with narrow exceptions. Assign a new GTIN instead.
- Leaving inner barcodes visible on a multipack. The checkout may scan a single unit instead of the pack. Fully cover every barcode that carries a different GTIN.
EAN-13 compared with related barcodes
Carries a 12-digit GTIN-12 and needs 9X quiet zones on both sides; use it when your number has 12 digits including the check digit.
Carries a GTIN-8, issued singly by GS1 organisations and only for small packs: under 80 cm² printable area, 40 cm² of label or 30 mm diameter.
An EAN-13 whose 978 or 979 number comes from the ISBN agency.
Adds batch, expiry and other data with Application Identifiers (AIs), but GS1 does not list it for retail checkouts. It marks cases and pallets in distribution.
DataBar Omnidirectional is also approved at checkouts and needs no quiet zones; DataBar Expanded can add weight and price to the GTIN of fresh food.
A QR Code or Data Matrix holding the GTIN, and data such as a batch number, as a web address. During the 2D transition it can be added next to the EAN-13, ideally within 50 mm.
