GS1 Digital Link QR Code
Choose it for shoppers: phone cameras open it without an app, and GS1 recommends it for consumer engagement. It needs a 4-module quiet zone; the generator uses error correction level L.

Create a QR Code or Data Matrix whose web address carries your GTIN: phones open the link, GS1-enabled scanners read the GTIN, batch or expiry date.
Use a domain you own, such as id.example.com, as GS1 recommends; id.gs1.org is also valid. Type the GTIN in 14 digits, with zeros in front of a shorter one: the generator checks neither length nor check digit.
Fill in batch, serial number or expiry date (YYMMDD) if you print a code per batch or item; the generator places them as GS1 prescribes. Choose QR Code for phones, Data Matrix for tight space.
For packs scanned only at retail checkouts, set 0.396–0.990 mm per module in whole printer dots; GS1's target is 0.495 mm. Download PNG, or SVG with a plan, and keep 4 modules clear around a QR Code, 1 around a Data Matrix: the image has no margin by default.
A GS1 Digital Link is a web address built from GS1 identifiers, such as https://id.gs1.org/01/09520123456788 for the Global Trade Item Number (GTIN) 09520123456788. GS1, a not-for-profit standards organisation, defines this Uniform Resource Identifier (URI) syntax. In a QR Code or Data Matrix, the address does two jobs. A phone opens it like any other link, and a scanner set up for GS1 reads the GTIN, batch or expiry date offline.
GS1's own example is a pasta box that shoppers scan for recipes. On steak packs with GTIN and batch, a phone camera can open a page on where the animal was raised and processed. Retail staff scanning the same code with an app get structured master data.
At the checkout, updated scanner software can pass the GTIN to the till as an element string, so the till needs no upgrade for the URI syntax. For locations and assets in open supply chains, GS1 allows Digital Link codes only beside a GS1-128, GS1 DataMatrix or GS1 QR Code. In healthcare, GS1 marks them as not applicable.
Because the GTIN always follows /01/, a checkout scanner reads it offline from the same symbol that links shoppers to your content. A redirect on your server decides where the link leads, so a recall notice or promotion needs no reprint.
The drawing shows this page's example at 0.495 mm per module, GS1's target for retail checkouts: 12.38 mm wide, 16.34 mm with the quiet zone. GS1's minimum print quality there is 1.5/12/660, grade 1.5 with a 12-mil aperture under 660 nm red light.
Codes download free as PNG, GIF or JPG, one at a time without an account; SVG and higher print resolution come with a plan. A free sign-in gives you data sheets for a product range: one URI per row, many codes in one download.
For a code per batch or item, Barcode Studio includes GS1 Digital Link and exports CSV-imported batches in one run. TBarCode SDK encodes any URI, even attributes the online form lacks, in .NET, C++ or COM applications; TBarCode/SAPwin prints the codes from SAPscript and Smart Forms.
GS1's own example shows the four parts:
| Part | Example | Rule |
|---|---|---|
| Scheme and domain | https://id.gs1.org | Any domain, HTTPS recommended; the only part where case does not matter |
| Primary key | /01/09520123456788 | Application Identifier (AI) 01, then the GTIN in 14 digits |
| Key qualifiers | /10/ABC1/21/12345 | Batch before serial number; a consumer product variant (22) would come first |
| Data attributes | ?17=180426 | Expiry date 26 April 2018 as YYMMDD; attributes in any order |
GS1 equates this URI with the element strings (01)09520123456788(17)180426(10)ABC1(21)12345.
A slash, question mark or ampersand inside a value must be percent-encoded, such as %2F for a slash, because the URI uses them as separators. The generator does this for you, so type the plain value, but it leaves apostrophes, asterisks, parentheses and exclamation marks unencoded, against GS1's rule.
The GS1 identifiers, not the domain, identify the product: the domain only decides where a phone goes, and an app may replace it with its own.
id.example.com that keeps product identity and scan statistics apart from your website. Shoppers see your brand, and if the brand is sold, the domain goes with it: no reprint.Either way, let the URI redirect instead of encoding a campaign page: the URI is the product's lasting identifier, while pages move. GS1 does not require a resolver but strongly recommends redirection.
At GS1's target of 0.495 mm per module, this generator's codes measure, quiet zone included:
| Encoded data | QR Code | Data Matrix |
|---|---|---|
| GTIN only (this page's example) | 25 × 25 modules, 16.34 mm | 22 × 22 modules, 11.88 mm |
| GTIN, batch, serial number, expiry date (GS1's example) | 29 × 29 modules, 18.32 mm | 32 × 32 modules, 16.83 mm |
/21/12345/10/ABC1 breaks GS1's order and is not a valid Digital Link. The generator keeps the order, but a data sheet does not check GS1's syntax.Holds the data as element strings behind FNC1 (]Q3) instead of a web address. For locations and assets it may stand alone, while a Digital Link QR Code may only be added.
Element strings in a Data Matrix with FNC1 (]d2): the smallest 2D code at retail checkouts and approved for regulated healthcare, but phones need an app.
A free-form web address also links phones, but without GS1's path structure a checkout scanner finds no GTIN in it.
Carries only the GTIN and stays on the pack during GS1's move to 2D.
Both variants encode the same URI.
Choose it for shoppers: phone cameras open it without an app, and GS1 recommends it for consumer engagement. It needs a 4-module quiet zone; the generator uses error correction level L.
