Free UPC-A barcode generator.
UPC-A is the 12-digit UPC barcode on consumer products in the US and Canada. Type 11 digits of your Global Trade Item Number (GTIN-12); the generator adds the check digit.
How to create a UPC-A barcode
-
01
Type your prefix and item reference
Your U.P.C. Company Prefix and item reference make 11 digits; the generator adds the check digit, or checks it if you type all 12. Keep zeros at the start: they belong to the prefix.
-
02
Set dpi and module width
Enter your printer's dpi and make the module width, the narrowest bar or X-dimension, a whole number of pixels. Checkouts take 0.264–0.660 mm (0.0104–0.0260 inch); GS1 US sets the nominal X-dimension at 0.330 mm (0.0130 inch).
-
03
Download and check the bar height
Download PNG for labels or, with a plan, SVG for packaging artwork; the image already includes the 9X quiet zones. Check the bar height: at 0.330 mm, bars must be at least 22.85 mm (0.900 inch) high.
What is a UPC-A barcode?
A UPC-A barcode holds a GTIN-12: 11 digits that identify a product at the checkout, plus a check digit. The name stands for Universal Product Code, version A. GS1, the not-for-profit standards organization, licenses the numbers through GS1 US and GS1 Canada. The bars hold only the GTIN; batch numbers and expiry dates need a second barcode, such as GS1-128 or a 2D code.
Who prints UPC-A and who scans it
Brands selling in the US and Canada print UPC-A on groceries, electronics, clothing, toys, cosmetics and DIY goods. You send the product data and GTIN-12 to your retailers; once they load it, the scan at the register calls up price and details.
Deli and meat counters sell random-weight goods under numbers that start with 2 and contain the price; the store's scale prints the label, or the supplier marks the pack. A drug's UPC-A can start with 3, built from the labeler code that the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) assigns.
Orders, invoices and checkout scans run on your GTIN-12
Your retailer stores the pack's GTIN-12 and uses it on purchase orders, advance ship notices and invoices in electronic data interchange (EDI, ASC X12 qualifier UP). GS1 US notes that a wrongly assigned GTIN causes invoice errors and delays delivery to the retailer.
At checkouts, GS1 sets a minimum print grade of 1.5, known as ANSI grade C. GS1 Canada counts the verification report, also known as a U.P.C. Certificate of Conformity, as part of the product listing requirement with a trading partner.
One UPC-A per variant, created in bulk
GS1 US requires its own GTIN for every size, flavor or packaging style. Without an account, the online generator makes one UPC-A at a time; after a free sign-in, a data sheet turns a list of these GTIN-12s into barcodes at once.
Barcode Studio imports your GTIN-12s from a CSV or text file and exports all symbols in one run, also from the command line. Its Pro edition adds EPS, PDF and AI (Illustrator) vector files. TBarCode Office ties each UPC-A to an Excel cell; in SAP, TBarCode/SAPwin prints it from SAPscript or Smart Forms via the print control C=UA.

What the 12 digits mean
A GTIN-12 consists of a U.P.C. Company Prefix, an item reference and a check digit. The prefix is your GS1 Company Prefix without the 0 in front, so GS1's example 0614141 becomes 614141, leaving 5 digits for 100,000 item references.
The first digit, formerly called the number system character, shows the kind of number:
| First digit | Number type |
|---|---|
| 0, 1, 6–9 | GTIN-12 from a U.P.C. Company Prefix (some ranges starting with 00 are reserved) |
| 2 | Restricted number for goods sold by weight; GS1 US layout: 5 item digits, price verifier digit, 4-digit price, check digit |
| 3 | GTIN-12 whose prefix follows an FDA labeler code of the National Drug Code (NDC) |
| 4 | Restricted number, valid within one company only |
| 5 | Coupons from 1985 to mid-2015, since replaced by GS1 DataBar |
Check digit of GS1 US's example 61414100001:
- Multiply the digits by 3 and 1 in turn, starting with 3: 18, 1, 12, 1, 12, 1, 0, 0, 0, 0, 3.
- Add them up: 48.
- 50 is the nearest equal or higher multiple of ten: 50 − 48 = 2.
- Result: 614141000012; as 13 digits 0614141000012, in a 14-digit database field 00614141000012.
UPC-A and EAN-13 at the checkout
In its bars, a UPC-A is an EAN-13 whose first digit is 0. Scanners can report it as 13 digits, 0 plus the GTIN-12; the 0 is a filler and does not change the GTIN.
GS1 US asked North American retailers to process EAN-13 from January 2005 (Sunrise 2005), so EAN-13 products scan in US and Canadian stores too.
- Prefix not starting with 0. It cannot form GTIN-12s; its products get GTIN-13s in an EAN-13.
- Digits. A UPC-A prints 12, the first and last outside the guard bars; an EAN-13 prints 13.
- Quiet zones. 9X on both sides for UPC-A; 11X left and 7X right for EAN-13.
UPC-A sizes, margins and print checks
With quiet zones, the symbol is always 113 modules wide; the minimum bar height is 69.24 modules:
| Size | X-dimension | Width incl. quiet zones | Minimum bar height |
|---|---|---|---|
| 80% | 0.264 mm (0.0104 inch) | 29.83 mm (1.18 inch) | 18.28 mm (0.720 inch) |
| 100% | 0.330 mm (0.0130 inch) | 37.29 mm (1.47 inch) | 22.85 mm (0.900 inch) |
| 150% (minimum if also scanned in distribution) | 0.495 mm (0.0195 inch) | 55.94 mm (2.20 inch) | 34.28 mm (1.350 inch) |
| 200% | 0.660 mm (0.0260 inch) | 74.58 mm (2.94 inch) | 45.70 mm (1.800 inch) |
- Quiet zones. UPC-A can be scanned from either end, so keep 9X (2.97 mm at nominal size) clear on both sides: no text, perforations or die lines. Below 8X, verifiers grade the scan profile 0.
- Colors. Black on white gives good contrast; dark blue or dark green bars also work. Avoid red, orange and yellow bars: the scanner's laser does not see red.
- Verification. GS1 Canada recommends a third-party check before production and another on the finished pack, contents and overwrap included.
Common UPC-A mistakes
- Dropping zeros at the start. Stored as a number, 012345000058 turns into 12345000058, which the generator reads as 11 new digits: 123450000588. Store GTINs as text, like GS1 US's zero-filled 14-digit field.
- Pasting the 14-digit form. 00614141000012 does not fit the 11- or 12-digit form; drop the two filler zeros.
- Giving the case the unit's GTIN-12. GS1 US requires different GTINs for the retail unit and the case. Give the case its own, such as a GTIN-14 starting with indicator digit 1, in an ITF-14.
- Cutting the bars short. GS1 Canada warns of trading partner penalties for truncated symbols on packs with room for full height. Reduce the X-dimension instead.
When another retail barcode fits better
Holds a GTIN-13 from a GS1 Company Prefix that does not start with 0.
Squeezes a GTIN-12 that starts with 0 and has four or five zeros in set places into six characters for small packs; GS1 US no longer licenses UPC-E prefixes.
Holds a GTIN-8 for small items, mostly outside North America, where neither UPC-A nor EAN-13 fits.
Carries the GTIN-12 in 14-digit form after (01), without quiet zones. For fresh food, DataBar Expanded can also hold weight and price.
