GetBlue: Bluetooth/TCP-IP Data Acquisition for Android

GetBlue is software to automatically capture data with Android™ smartphones and tablets. Serial Bluetooth® devices, TCP devices and external camera scanning apps are supported. The collected data is displayed, logged, stored, forwarded, or injected as virtual user input into other apps (data acquisition via keyboard wedge). Finally manual communications functions are available.

New in GetBlue V1.4: Virtual keyboard integrates Bluetooth barcode scanning into all Android apps (data injection).

Bluetooth and TCP/IP Data Acquisition for Android Smartphones

GetBlue is a completely new Android application for bi-directional data acquisition with barcode scanner apps, serial Bluetooth devices and TCP/IP endpoints. You can

  • connect to arbitrary Bluetooth SPP devices (Serial Port Profile, RFCOMM),
  • collect data from TCP/IP devices,
  • utilize 3rd party camera scanner apps as barcode scanner,
  • receive and display device data immediately, save it to a file or copy it into the clipboard,
  • inject captured data into arbitrary apps (via the GetBlue keyboard wedge),
  • transfer captured data to (web-) applications via TCP sockets or HTTP requests,
  • automatically store captured data in a Google Spreadsheet,
  • send server responses as well as manually entered data or control commands back to the device.

Bluetooth Barcode Scanning for ALL Apps

With the keyboard wedge mode of GetBlue you are able to use Bluetooth barcode scanners with each application on the Android handset. Each Bluetooth scanner supporting the serial port profile (SPP, RFCOMM) can be used for this purpose (Bluetooth modules like RN41, BTM222, etc are also supported). Costly hardware updates (e.g. new barcode scanners) are not required!

GetBlue offers a specialized soft-keyboard. This keyboard is named GetBlue Keyboard and can be activated in Android Settings. After changing the input method of your Droid to this keyboard, collected data is automatically simulated as user-input. Some of the advantages:

  • no need to key-in barcode data manually,
  • reduces input errors, speeds up operation,
  • application switching is not necessary,
  • works with each 3rd party app,
  • works completely transparent to manual user input,
  • control keys for automated cursor movements (or simulated TAB keys) are supported,
  • can also be used with TCP/IP based scanners, RFID controllers and gauges,
  • battery saving background operation.

GetBlue offers various possibilities for automated data acquisition. In addition to manual data exchange with Bluetooth or TCP devices, captured data is automatically saved to an arbitrary Google Spreadsheet. Besides this, device data can be forwarded via HTTP GET, HTTP POST or TCP sockets to adjustable data-logger applications. GetBlue works as background service. If required, responses from the target application are sent back to device (bi-directional mode).

This software tool is perfect for:

  • the automated data acquisition with Bluetooth devices,
  • the simple creation of barcode lists in Google Spreadsheets,
  • testing Bluetooth barcode scanners or arbitrary Bluetooth devices supporting the Serial Port Profile (SPP, RFCOMM),
  • communication with Bluetooth modules like BTM 222 or similar,
